Having trouble running CannisRules? While trouble is not very common, it's also not unheard of. Odds are, the solution to your problem can be found here. Plus I've added several other questions I've been asked many many times. If you can't find your answer here, the next step would be to ask for help on our forums.

From the experiences of those who've encountered problems with this mod (and any other mod for that matter), I can tell you that 9 out of 10 times, this answer is the most likely to solve things.

Do I have to uninstall an earlier version of CannisRules before I can run CannisRules v1.8?
No. All versions of the mod remove all traces of themselves on game exit, so uninstalling is not necessary. If you really want to, you could leave an old version on your system and alternate playing between the two versions. (Though I have no idea why you would want to, since the current version is the best). Top of Page

The mod keeps crashing the game! Help!
You first have to be sure to patch Yuri's Revenge to v1.001 so the game can read all the mod files. You can get the official v1.001 patch here. If you're sure the game is properly patched, and you're still having problems, then look here. Top of Page

When I try to run the mod, I get the new splash screen and other graphics, but why do none of the mods take effect?
You need to patch Yuri's Revenge to v1.001 so the game can read all the mod files. You can get the official v1.001 patch here. Top of Page

There are some missing features, missing game modes, and/or game crashes when I build certain units. Why is this?
It is possible that you have loose files in your game folder that are left over from other mods or projects. You could completely uninstall (that means not only uninstall, but also delete your RA2 folder and its contents afterwards) then reinstall fresh... or you could manually remove the files that might be causing the problem. I recommend the latter so you don't lose all the maps you've probably downloaded.

Let's assume a system where Red Alert2 and Yuri's Revenge have just been installed and patched. Additionally, let's assume that the Assault Mappacks and the Terrain Expansion have been added; and that you have installed some or all of the extra music packs. These are the only files with the .INI and .MIX file extensions that you should see in the RA2 game folder:

Keyboard.ini - installed by game
KeyboardMD.ini - installed by game
ra2.ini - installed by game
RA2MD.ini - installed by game
Register.ini - installed by game
wolinfo.ini - installed by game
wolinfoMD.ini - installed by game
ecacheassault*.mix - various Assault Mappacks - user installed
ecachetheme*.mix - various music theme packs - user installed
expandmd01.mix - official 1.001 patch
expandmd06.mix - Terrain Expansion - user installed
langmd.mix - installed by game
language.mix - installed by game
ra2.mix - installed by game
ra2md.mix - installed by game

If you have any OTHER files in your RA2 folder with the .INI or .MIX file extensions, you should remove them.

Also, if you have any files at all with the .CSF, .PKT, .VXL, .HVA, or .SHP file extensions, you should remove them too. Top of Page

The mod launcher doesn't work. I get some sort of message saying a required DLL is missing?
A few people seem to have problems running the launcher. Here's what you should try:
- Place the CannisRules mod launcher into its own folder (create a new one).
- Download the XCC DLL Pack (you can find it here).
- Extract the contents of the DLL Pack into the same folder you created. The launcher should work now.

The manual doesn't work. I get some sort of error message instead?
Set Internet Explorer as your default browser. Top of Page

Do I need to download the Assault maps before I can play CannisRules?
No. You will be able to play CannisRules just fine without the Assault maps. You just won't be able to play the Assault or CTF game modes. Top of Page

How do I enable the playing of the extra music tracks?
Consult the "manual" bundled with the mod; click the "Manual" button on the mod launcher to access it. The instructions are there. Alternatively, these very same instructions can be found at the Purple Alert site, where the YR Playlist Modifier is described. Top of Page

Why don't you include a proper readme file with the mod, detailing all the changes?
Because the entire CannisRules website is mod documentation. I see no reason to bloat the size of the download by duplicating the website as a readme, and I don't want to have to double my work when updates are called for. I'd rather spend my time doing other things :) Top of Page

Every time I try to play the game, CannisRules is still enabled. How do I disable it?
What probably happened is that Yuri's Revenge did not exit gracefully, which interrupted the process that disables the mod. Just run the mod again using the launcher, and after the game starts, quit. Yuri's Revenge should be returned to its unmodded state. Top of Page

How do I uninstall CannisRules?
There's nothing to uninstall. If you don't want to play CannisRules ever again, then just delete the CannisRules mod launcher. I can't imagine why you would ever want to do such a silly thing though :) Top of Page

I need to remove the mod's files manually. How do I do this?
Consult the mod's manual; the files to be deleted and their locations are given in detail there.  Top of Page

I keep seeing updates of new versions on your site. Where can I get them?
You can't. Those are internal development versions, which I report on in the event anyone happens to be interested in hearing about them. The most currently-available and most up-to-date public version of CannisRules can always be found here. Top of Page

Can I play the single-player campaigns with CannisRules enabled?
Yes you can. There are some oddities, for example Soviets will be able to build YAK-24K Transports and train Spies in the Moon mission, and in the Allied Australian mission, the scripted Black Eagles may fail to destroy the Yuri Naval Yard. But these things will not prevent you from progressing through the campaigns. However, keep in mind that third-party missions may not always work as expected. Top of Page

You really should add lots of cool new units. Why don't you?
I did! Play the new Beyond Revenge game modes and check them out. For the other, "conventional" game modes, adding new units just for the sake of adding new units is not what CannisRules: Balance of Power is about. However, that's not to say that you won't find some special units in goodie crates, or won't get some unusual build options when capturing a Tech Secret Lab or infiltrating an enemy Battle Lab. Top of Page

Why didn't you nerf Yuri and just give all improvements to the Soviets?
Because I paid good money for an expansion pack and I see no reason to disable what that expansion pack includes. If you don't like Yuri, you can always play Red Alert2. Top of Page
